Thread and Roses
A column I write for the Textile Arts Center blog about textiles, labor, and activism.
The title of this column is a play on “Bread and Roses,” a phrase taken from a poem and used to refer to the 1912 textile workers strike in Lawrence, Massachusetts. The call of women marchers, “We want bread, but we want roses too,” is said to be a call for dignity as well as fair wages, that life should be beautiful as well as just.
Sewing Seeds
Sewing Seeds is a program of the Textile Arts Center with the mission of providing accessible, accurate information and inspiration on natural dyes to the community. Sewing Seeds includes a "living library" of dye plants at a community garden to be used for education and research; a freely available online resource on natural dyes; local production of dye plants and naturally-dyed yarns; and events to connect with the wider Brooklyn community who are interested in slow food, urban agriculture, and local production.
This link is to the blog column for sewing seeds that I contribute to regularly.
Participate
Thank you to everyone who helped produce the participatory installation "The males have wings but it is the females whose bodies are crushed to extract their red dye. But red is also the color of the sun."

The installation was produced for the New York show "Disposable: Ciudad Juarez and the War on Women"
